How do you choose an IVF clinic in the UK?
Compare clinics on HFEA-published live birth rates for your age band rather than their own marketing, then weigh their inspection rating, how they handle add-ons, whether you see the same consultant throughout, how far you can realistically travel for early-morning scans, and a written all-in quote. Travel time and communication matter more than most people expect.
How do you tell your employer you're having IVF?
There is no legal obligation to tell a UK employer you are having IVF, and no statutory right to fertility treatment leave. In practice, telling one trusted person — usually your line manager or HR — makes short-notice appointments far easier, and once you are pregnant after a transfer you gain full pregnancy-related protection under the Equality Act.
When can you test after embryo transfer?
Your clinic will book a beta hCG blood test around nine to twelve days after a day-5 blastocyst transfer, or twelve to fourteen days after a day-3 transfer. Home tests can pick up a pregnancy from about six days after a blastocyst transfer, but early results are unreliable and the trigger injection can still be in your system for up to two weeks.
What are IVF success rates by age?
Using a woman's own eggs, the chance of a live birth per embryo transfer in the UK is roughly 30–35% under 35, around 25% at 35–37, around 18% at 38–39, around 10% at 40–42, and under 5% over 42. Donor egg cycles sit around 30–35% regardless of the recipient's age, because the odds follow the age of the eggs rather than the person carrying them.
